Building Trust in Journalism
I went back to my alma mater for an alumni weekend keynote conversation with friend and UC Berkeley School of Journalism Dean Michael Bolden in which we explored the urgent challenges facing journalism today, including declining public trust, the impact of misinformation, and the evolving relationship between journalists and the communities they serve. We discussed the principles of solutions journalism, which I’ve come to know quite well during my seven year tenure at the Solutions Journalism Network, and the importance of authentic storytelling, and how newsrooms and individuals can help rebuild trust in media and institutions. (And somehow we managed to have a little fun along the way.)
Building a Mutual Aid Model for Crisis Coverage
This was a timely session at ONA25 that I co-led with H. Co-led a Civic Journalism Lab Masterclass on the essentials of solutions journalism: rigorous reporting on responses to thorny social problems. Rather than merely investigating what is going wrong, solutions-focused journalists interrogate what is going right, plumbing the evidence of why some responses are working and offering insights to help replicate or scale-up solutions.
